    COMPETITION GUIDELINES:

    HOW TO APPLY:

Applications are being accepted from now and through Tuesday, January 17, 2012. The Solo Competition will be held on a Monday evening rehearsal at our regular rehearsal venue. The Competition does not replace the regularly scheduled rehearsal and further information will be provided as the date approaches.

To enter the Solo Competition fill out the application form and submit it to our office via mail, fax or in person. Each student will receive by email a notification of the assigned audition time by no later than two weeks prior to the competition’s date. Contestants who will arrive after the assigned time will not be allowed to perform. Please plan to arrive early, warm-up rooms will be provided. Participants may not exchange audition times with other contestants.

    RULES:

Participants will be auditioned on any orchestral instrument. Double or triple concertos are accepted. Pianists, vocalists, or any non-orchestral instruments may not apply.

It is recommended that the concertos chosen by applicants are from the sample list below.  Applicants will be notified by end of January 2012 whether the concerto chosen is acceptable, based on the level of the piece, instrumentation, and other relevant factors.

All contestants must prepare at least two full contrasting movements from their concerto. We highly encourage students to perform their solo by memory, though it is not required. All contestants must provide their own accompanist for the competition. Each contestant must bring three copies of the piano score of the music performed, for the judges.

It is expected that the winners keep their performance level as high or higher by the first rehearsal date with the orchestra. There will be a mandatory meeting with the conductor one month prior to the first rehearsal date, where the winners are expected to demonstrate their competence of performing the work.

    THE COMPETITION:

The competition will be divided into three categories: strings, woodwinds/brass, double/triple concertos. A maximum of three winners will be chosen. The judges have the right to select no winners in case that the level of performance does not meet the standard of the competition. The decision of the judges will be final.

The names of the winners will be announced at the conclusion of the competition.
SJYS students and parents are welcome to sit as observers.
