Special Events and Merits:

  • The SJYS Philharmonic was invited to perform in Spain’s Granada International Music Festival. It is one of very few youth orchestras who have been chosen to perform in this prestigious festival, alongside leading orchestras from across the globe.
  • Members of the Philharmonic were invited to perform at the National Youth Choral Festival with the famed Chanticleer Choir, at Davis Symphony Hall in San Francisco. They performed alongside members of the San Francisco Symphony and Oakland Youth Orchestras, in the US premiere of "L'Annonciation" by Daniel Lesur, with world renowned mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade as narrator.
  • In 2007 the Philharmonic gave the US premiere performance of Alamuhan by Chinese composer Nai-chung Kuan, and Variations on a Korean Peasant Song by Korean composer Geongong Lee.
  • SJYS was rewarded numerous San Jose Mayor and Council Members Commendations for their musical services to the community.
  • SJYS Philharmonic Orchestra has been selected for the US Ambassador to Hungary’s award for Music Diplomacy. The reward was presented to the orchestra in their concert at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, by the Honorary USA Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary – Mrs. April H. Foley.
  • SJYS is the only youth orchestra on the West Coast of the US to be offering an after school educational music program Music Matters which provides instrumental lessons at elementary schools in the bay area. 
  • SJYS is the first youth orchestra in the West Coast of the US to present a Concert Tour in South America.
