2012 Competition Winners

The results are in! Congratulations to the winners of our competitions. They will perform their winning pieces in the 2012 - 2013 season. We would like to thank Mr. Chris Greene and the San Jose Symphony Foundation for sponsoring these competitions.

Philharmonic Young Artist Competition
First prize: Alex Ascencio, Faure - Elegie for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 24
Second prize: Cheryl Chang, Romberg - Flute Concerto in B minor, Op. 17
Third prize: Anish Srinivasan, Chaminade - Concertino for Flute and Orchestra. Op. 107

Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition
First prize: Minki Kim, Boccherini - Cello Concerto in B-flat major
Second prize: Joyce Jang, Weber - Andante and Rondo for Viola and Orchestra
Third prize: Ayumi Yuasa, Mozart - Andante K.315 for Flute and Orchestra

Concert Orchestra Solo Competition
Kristen Park, Weber - Concertino Op. 26 for Clarinet and Orchestra

General Information

Each year the San Jose Youth Symphony holds the Young Artist Competition, the Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Concert Orchestra Solo Competition in the spring. These competitions, sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation, are open exclusively to SJYS members. Participants will have the opportunity to perform in front of a panel of judges, and winners of the competitions will perform their solo pieces with their orchestras the following season.

The Application Deadlines are noted in the competition guidelines, which you can access below on this page. Interested applicants can download the application forms (see below) and mail the completed forms back to the office along with their $40 application fee.
