San Jose Youth Symphony

General Information

Each year the San Jose Youth Symphony holds the Young Artist Competition, the Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition and the Concert Orchestra Solo Competition in the spring. These competitions, sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation, are opened exclusively to the members of SJYS. Participants will have the opportunity to perform in front of a panel of judges, and winners of the competitions will perform their solo pieces with their orchestras the following season.

The competitions and their application deadlines will be announced on the website. Application forms can be downloaded from the website and fax or mail back to the office.

Winners are expected to keep their performance level as high or higher by the first rehearsal with the orchestras. There will be a mandatory meeting with the conductor one month prior to the first rehearsal date, where the winners are expected to demonstrate their competence of performing the work.

The results are in! Congratulations to the winners of our competitions. They will perform their winning pieces in the 2011 - 2012 season. We would like to thank Mr. Chris Greene and the San Jose Symphony Foundation for sponsoring these competitions.

Philharmonic Young Artist Competition
First Prize: Iris Liu, Shostakovich Cello Concerto

Chamber Orchestra Concerto Competition
First prize: Anish Srinivasan, Ibert's flute concerto
Second prize: Eunice Sim, Haydn's cello concerto in C major
Third prize: Samuel Ng, Saint-Saens' Havanaise

Concert Orchestra Solo Competition
First prize: Joyce Jang, Hoffmeister's viola concerto
Second prize: Charlie Liou, Accolay's violin concerto
