Each season the San Jose Youth Symphony performs many concerts to serve our community. Each December we perform at the annual Season of Hope concerts at the St. Joseph Basilica in downtown San Jose. This event is part of the City of San Jose's Christmas in the Park Celebration. Many ensembles also perform at special occasions and community venues through out the year.
In the summer of 2009, SJYS visited Santiago, Chile. This was the first stop of our South American tour. We performed a joint concert with the Chilean National Youth Orchestra (video) and made a lot of friends. When the 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile we decided to dedicate our March 13, 2010 concert to the Chilean earthquake relief effort. Mr. Alex Geiger, the Chilean General Consul and Mrs. Geiger attended our concert. We started a fundraising effort and collected $3000 for the earthquake relief. Here is a letter from Mr. Geiger thanking our effort.
During the South American tour, SJYS performed two concerts in Argentina for under privilege communities. These concerts brought classical music to these neighborhoods for the first time and were well received. Our musicians appreciated the opportunity to share the joy of music with them.
