String pedagogue, violist, and conductor Stephen Moore is the San Jose Youth Symphony’s Concert Orchestra Conductor. He also serves as Co-Director of the San Francisco State University Summer Strings Workshop, a CMEA Bay Section adjudicator and clinician, is Secretary for CalASTA, and teaches in the Santa Clara Unified School District.
Mr. Moore’s extensive and wide-reaching experience includes serving as Orchestra Director at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (SOTA), Orchestra Director and Music Department Facilitator for the Dixie School District and Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael, and Orchestra Representative of the California Music Educators’ Association (CMEA) Bay Section. He has worked with ensembles throughout the Bay Area, including the El Camino Youth Symphony, Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the Stanford University Flute Ensemble, and conducted the Mt. Diablo Unified School District High School Honor Orchestra, Marin County Honor Orchestra, and San Francisco Unified School District All-City Middle School Orchestra. Mr. Moore has been the Junior Orchestra Director at the Hayward-La Honda Music Camp, Co-Director of the University of the Pacific Junior Music Camp Orchestra, judged for the US Open Music Competition, and regularly presents workshops for both the CMEA Bay Section Winter Conference and CASMEC.
A dedicated teacher and violist, Mr. Moore’s students have won concerto competitions for the Anchorage Symphony and the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra. Orchestras and ensembles under his direction have received numerous unanimous superiors, gold medals, and command performances at local and state festival adjudications. He has performed with many Bay Area ensembles, including the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, West Bay Opera, Lamplighters Music Theatre, Broadway by the Bay, ChamberMix, as well as the Napa, Vallejo, Sacramento and Santa Cruz Symphonies. He has been Principal Viola of the San Francisco Sinfonietta, San Francisco Lyric Opera, the Winifred Baker Chorale of Dominican University, and is Principal of Marin Oratorio. Mr. Moore was invited to perform at the Arosa Musik Festival in Arosa, Switzerland and with the American Philharmonic of Sonoma County on its 2011 China tour.
Mr. Moore received his Bachelor of Music in Performance from Northwestern University, where he studied with Peter Slowik and Robert Swan of the Chicago Symphony. He has studied viola with Paul Yarbrough and chamber music with the Alexander Quartet at San Francisco State University, where he completed his Single Subject Music Credential.
